"AWARDS ARE NOT WON, THEY ARE EARNED"

On February 8, 2023, the SFA marching band, now called the "SONIC BOOM", received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement award and a congressional award of recognition. Director Kevon Runnels said that 18 years ago, one student showed up for band camp but now the band has dreams of performing at the 2025 Tournament of Roses Parade. Congratulations and we must say, "Gotta love the new name and those capes on the uniforms." heart

On August 12, 2021, one of SFA's great basketball players, Ken Spain (Class of 1965), received overdue recognition when inducted into HISD's Athletic Hall of Honor.  After graduation, Ken played for UH with Elvin Hayes, won a gold medal for basketball in the 1968 Olympics, and was then drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1969-1970.  At the young age 44, Ken died of cancer.  His beloved sister, Janelle Spain (SFA Class of 1968) and beloved brother, David Spain (SFA Class of 1967) were both in attendance at the ceremoney to accept the award on Ken's behalf.   Click here for entire Article.
